We carried everything with us, and had no contact with civilization. We hiked over 100 miles total. Highlights included: Hiking Baldy Mountain & climbing Little Costilla Peak (both over 12,000 elevation). We also participated in living history - such living in a 19th century logging community, and working on rebuilding the Cimarron and Northwestern Railroad.
In July, 2017, several scouts attended the National Scout Jamboree at The Summit Bechtel Scout Reserve in West Virginia. Over 40,000 scouts from throughout the U.S. attended all or part of this 10-day event. Just a few of the activities included: meeting an astronaut, trading patches, & attending an evening outdoor concert. The experience of being among all these fellow scouts was one for the ages and will be remembered for a lifetime. This two week trip also encompassed side trips to historic Harper’s Ferry, WV, Washington, D.C., Monticello, Gettysburg Battlefield National Park, and hiking the AT (Appalachian Trail) in Virginia, which included a hike up to the crest of Humpback Rock.

Troop 570’s trek to Philmont was an incredible experience. The Scouts and adults spent a week backpacking in the Sangre de Christo mountains on Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, NM. We covered about 35 miles, at elevations over 9,000 ft. We carried all our gear in our backpacks and hung up our food and other “smellables” in bear bags at night. Some of the highlights included climbing Hart Peak and trekking through beautiful Wilson’s Mesa. The trekkers participated in many fun activities, including: spar pole climbing, cowboy shooting, shotgun shell reloading and shooting, and making railroad ties. Our trip culminated with tours of both the National Scouting Museum and Villa Philmonte Estate near Philmont.
The Troop took a high adventure trip to West Virginia and Virginia in June 2024. The scouts stayed at Sherando Recreation Area in central Virginia where in downtime they could fish and swim. Hiking highlights include roughly a 5-mile hike to a waterfall off the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Shenandoah Valley National Park where the scouts hiked the AT (Appalachian Trail) ascending Turk Gap Mountain. We cooked on the trail with portable stoves for requirements with hiking and camping merit badges. We also visited and toured Monticello (home of Thomas Jefferson). The scouts enjoyed meeting "TJ" who answered questions on his perspectives of issues and life back in the early 1800s. Finally, we white water rafted the New River. This was the trip's top-highlight for the scouts as they went down "the lower gorge" on class III and IV rapids.
